Arty takeover of Saxton Stadium Saxton Stadium will transform from a sporting venue into an art gallery this weekend for the third annual Art Expo Nelson. Art Expo Nelson brings together 120 artists from around the South Island, making it the largest gathering of artists in the Top of the South. “I can’t think of anything else that brings that many artists together in one place. There are a lot of artists

from all over the South Island, including one from Invercargill and some from Christchurch and Blenheim,” says project manager Nic Foster. Nic says there’s always a great vibe at the event, with a cafe/bar open as well. “People always get excited by this event, and the bonus for people is they might walk away with a piece of art that they really love.”

First time entrant, Georgia Barber, says it’s going to be “a head full of fun”. “I’ve not really done anything quite like this before so this is a pretty big deal for me,” she says. “I’m nervous too, but I’ve had a lot of encouragement.” Art Expo Nelson opens its doors at 10am on Friday and continues over both Saturday and Sunday.

Shoppers love free parking

It’s official: free parking in Nelson is a hit. Shoppers and retailers spoken to by Nelson Weekly say that just one week into the new free parking policy the city has more of a “buzz” about it. Today marks one week since the start of the free parking policy in Nelson city. Over the weekend, the Weekly hit the streets and asked shoppers what they thought of the

move and if it was more likely to bring them into the CBD to do their shopping. The results were unanimously positive. “I think it’s a brilliant idea, from what I hear we’re already seeing more traffic and shoppers in the city,” says Margot Wilson. While Suzy Keatsman says, “I think it’s absolutely fantastic and you can already feel there’s more of a vibe in Nelson because of

Jessie Johnston Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz more people coming in.” Retailers were equally impressed, saying they noticed a big difference just a week into the policy’s three month trial.

Peter Rigg from Page and Blackmore says they’ve had a great week. “We had an exceptional day on Saturday; in fact we’ve noticed a remarkable up-take since Tuesday. We wondered what was going on until we clicked it was free parking so, yeah, we have noticed a difference.” For more coverage on free parking in Nelson see pages 18 and 19.

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese has thrown her support behind the government’s plan to investigate building a third arterial route to the city, but says the council will need more information before it will take on the notoriously expensive Rocks Rd. Rachel says she feels like she’s “boxing at shadows” until the detailed plans for the southern link are released, but she backs it in principle because it will provide the city a secure link for produce going from the Tasman district to Port Nelson. “It’s a positive step. I see this as a growing region, an exporting region. We need to get that produce to the port and I want to make it easy for people to get around in the city, whether it’s bus, bike or car,” she says. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Craig Clayworth escorts Nicole Wilson and her son Tyler, 5, from their burning home in Richmond on Monday morning. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Boy wakes mum as fire engulfs house Simon Bloomberg A young mother can thank her five-year-old son Tyler for probably saving their lives after fire destroyed their home on Monday morning. Nicole Wilson and her son were asleep in their Richmond home when the fire broke out in the front of the house. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s officer in charge Craig Clayworth, says the batteries in the home’s smoke alarms were flat and it was “very lucky” that Tyler woke up and alerted his mother so they could get out in time. “They weren’t awake when the fire started, but it woke up the young child and he woke up

his mother,” Craig says. “They were very, very lucky.” But Craig says they still were concerned that there were people in the house when they arrived at about 9am. “Usually, when you arrive at a house fire the occupants are standing outside, but there was no one. We thought there could be people still inside, so two crews started kitting up [with breathing apparatus] to go in when we found the mother and her son by the garage.” Two fire crews from Richmond, two from Stoke and one from Nelson took about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, that destroyed the front of the house and smoke-damaged the back.

Bright start for Light Nelson

The Queen’s Garden were glowing on Thursday night, as hundreds of primary school students released floating lanterns into the ponds for the annual Float a Wish event. Students from across Nelson and Tasman spent last week building the floating lanterns out of biodegradable materials, and on Thursday night they joined together with other schools. A tealight was placed inside the lanterns, along with a wish written by the individual, and then released into the water. Wishes included wanting bullying to end in their community, building a bridge between the North Island and South Island and hoping for a waterslide at the ASB Aquatic Centre – and most were focused on their school or region. The event was part of Light Nelson.

Stormwater system needs urgent upgrade Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz in recent years and these intense rainfall events – they’re going to continue to happen.” Borrowing the money to complete stormwater projects is the only option, says Rachel, because the cost would be “unaffordable” to pass on to ratepayers straight away via a rate rise. She says the projects will take time, but the biggest challenge will be deciding which areas get upgraded first. “It’s challenging and I really feel for the people who have been impacted, it’s tough. People have lost possessions, some have even lost family pets. “It’s an awful situation and I know that spending money on stormwater and flood protection is incredibly boring, well actually it becomes incredibly relevant when you’re one of those people who has filthy water through their house.”

Nelson City Council will borrow millions of dollars to upgrade the region’s failing stormwater and flood protection systems, says Nelson mayor Rachel Reese. In the past four years various parts of Nelson have suffered flooding, the latest just two weeks ago when some Victory residents were forced out of their homes, due to the stormwater systems being unable to cope with the amount of rain that fell in a short space of time. Rachel says many of the region’s stormwater systems aren’t designed to cope with the type of heavy rain we’ve experienced in the past few years. “Some of our stormwater systems are designed for one in 15 year events to one in 50 year events. We need to move those up to one in 100 year events because we’re going to continue to get those regularly.” She says previous councils have failed to maintain the systems and they need urgent attention. “I think it’s fair to say that we haven’t invested enough in this area

The shield started as a challenge between two patrons for a game of tennis. They developed the idea for a charity shield and to raise money from their foolery. Another patron made the shield and, with the money, they bought two kayaks for the special education department at Waimea College. Since then they’ve hosted tri-egg-athlon, a baking contest and regular quiz nights, and have donated the proceeds to various community groups. Prince Albert's Erin Ririnui says the money was an accumulation from its weekly raffles, bake-offs and the donations from its quiz nights. "We heard that when Victory School did the Weetbix Tryathalon they had to borrow bikes for some of the students, so they said nine bikes would be a big help.” Shield founder Chris Gunn says all the donating worked up a healthy thirst. "It's a win-win for everybody, we feel good and thirsty by the end of it and they get some new bikes," he joked. Fewer flu jabs this winter Locally Owned and Operated

Almost 39,000 people in Nelson and Marlborough have lined up for their flu jab this winter, a few thousand fewer than last year. In 2013, 40,775 people had got the influenza immunisation by the end of July. This year 38,630 had done so by the end of June and officials are urging people to get in before the flu season starts later this month. To date, almost 1.18 million flu vaccines have been distributed across the country. This compares to over 1.25 million doses distributed last year. Even though 2013 was one of the mildest influenza seasons in 20 years, 782 people were hospitalised with influenza, says the ministry of health. Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Dr Ed Kiddle, says influenza immunisation is still available and is free until the end of

July, for people over 65 years, people with ongoing health conditions such as asthma, and it is also free for pregnant women. “The flu is not just a cold and can be a serious illness, especially when complicated by pre-existing health conditions. Vaccination covers the three major strains of influenza that are likely to circulate in our community this winter,” says Ed. Associate Health Minister Jo Goodhew is also encouraging anyone who has not yet been immunised against influenza to do so before the winter season peaks in late July to early August. “The vaccine takes up to two weeks to take effect, so now is the time to take action to avoid catching and spreading influenza,” says Mrs Goodhew. Young leaders recognised with red socks Georgia Nicholls stood stunned when her name was mentioned as a top young leader, but the smile slowly grew as she was called forward to receive the Sir Peter Blake Young Leader award. Ten minutes after the surprise ceremony, at the Enner Glynn Community Hall last Thursday night, she was still beaming with pride. "I'm a little bit shocked," she finally managed to say. Georgia was one of two award recipients in the Nelson region. The other was Stoke School pupil Jaxon Marshall. The awards were held in conjunction with Red Socks Day last Friday, which celebrates young leaders in our communities in the memory of Sir Peter Blake. Georgia was nominated for her leadership efforts with the Arapiki District Girl Guides and at her school, Broadgreen Intermediate. Girl Guide leader Toni Charles says Georgia took on the challenge of helping the young Pippins at the start of the year and hasn't let up, attending several camps and almost every Pippins meeting at Enner Glynn. Georgia says she was more than shocked by the award, but "very happy". Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, Shelley Campbell, says Sir Peter believed in the potential of young Kiwis to achieve great

Georgia and Jaxon were both presented with their awards by Westpac Stoke branch manager, Chris Martin. Community Awards – Tuesday July 1: Project Butterfly were recognised as the 2014 Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards supreme winners, at a gathering of more than 230 people. The group of volunteers were behind a healing memorial pathway that pays tribute to children gone too soon. They received a framed certificate, a trophy, $1500 and the opportunity to represent the region at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards. Community Patrol – Tuesday June 24: Last weekend’s National Training Seminar for Community Patrol New Zealand was a big success according to Mike Gill. The training seminar brought together hundreds of members from all of the country’s community patrols, as well as special guests from within the police. The event was held at Nelson College for Girls and the Nelson Suburban Club. Mike says the highlight was the praise CPNZ received from police.

Quacking the big time Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz She’s only ten years old but Holly Irvine is already “quacking” the big time. The 10 year old Henley School student recently attended the New Zealand Duck Calling Championship in Queenstown, and finished ninth in a field filled with adult males. Holly was the only female and the only child to reach the national final, which featured all of the regional winners. Her father Geoff Irvine says everyone was completely blown away by the fact a 10 year old girl was competing at the national final – and that she was good. “There were guys there who have been blowing duck calls for years and here is a 10 year old girl,” he says. Duck calling is a “quirky off shoot” to duck hunting, according to Geoff, who says duck hunting has always been a “family thing”. “We’re really into our duck hunting. She’s come along since she’s been five or six. Little kids can’t obviously use guns so you just teach them how to do duck calling so it makes it fun for them.” Geoff says “when you hear a bad one you’ll know”, because it’s all squeaky and horrible. Holly, when she does it, sounds exactly like a duck. Little kids pick up things really well, but she practices and all of that.”

City bars pass test

Nelson bars and bottle stores have come through the latest police sting with flying colours. Nelson Police, in conjunction with district health board and liquor licensing staff, recently conducted an extensive controlled purchase operation checking licensed premises in Nelson city and in the Tasman District. Thirty-two premises were visited by 16 year old volunteers who attempted to purchase alcohol. No sale was made at 30 sites, however two Brightwater stores sold alcohol to the 16 year olds. The sales were made at the Brightwater Four Square and the Wanderers Rugby Club bar. Sergeant Steve Savage says the fact that 30 premises refused to sell was encouraging.

Sale Richmond’s Holly Irvine, 10, finished in the top ten at the New Zealand Duck Calling Championships last month. Photo: Phillip Rollo. While duck calling is a relatively small hobby in Nelson, down south it was “like a religion”, says Geoff. “It’s huge. It’s really big and they have really big events too.” Holly says the neighbours know how good she is too. “One time we were calling and there was a duck and it landed in their pool,”

she says. She entered in the school’s talent quest last week, but Holly says some of the students thought it was “a bit weird”. The plan is for Holly to continue entering competitions, but when asked whether she’s content with calling or wanted to get into hunting, she says she wants to do both.

Southern Link: The debate over the Southern Link goes a lot further than the road. Tahunanui is Nelson City’s beach and the waterfront views between the City and the Tahunanui shops are nothing short of spectacular. Pedestrian access in the form of a promenade to this area alongside a quiet suburban road which has traffic calming measures and can carry cyclists safely would provide a much needed economic boost to Nelson City. As a former tourist accommodation provider, this is a concept I would recommend guests spend an extra night in Nelson to experience. It will contribute to the health of all Nelsonians and provide a recreational facility for all residents. Let’s get started! Cynthia McConville, The Wood.

Hurrah for Nick Smith and Rachael Reese. At long last (after 50 years!) something might be about to happen. We live in Atawhai and have the main highway ‘running through our backyard’ as Sharon May Patterson puts it, and it’s really not a major problem. Take the advice of John Baumfield and see the positives this change will bring. Just get over it, it’s not as if this has been sprung on you suddenly! And I think you’ll find that the vast majority of Nelsonians are in favour of this link. Alison Kelso. This is not simply a traffic issue, it is a freight issue. Not so much about cars, more about larger and larger trucks,

which Rocks Rd is not engineered to take, and are also causing the cliffs to crumble. Darren Joy Shackleton. Funny, I do not see property prices decreasing or people moving away from Tahuna simply because they have State Highway 6 running through their community? And Nick Smith should really get his figures right - there are not 1200 heavy vehicles travelling to the Port each day - I counted 12-13 heavy trucks over an hour at Tahuna corner lights. Most vehicles were private one-occupant cars, some trade vans, etc. Douglas John Craig. Nick Smith need to honestly answer questions about the Environment Court vetoing the Link in 2004, for mainly reasons of pollution in a valley. Will he ever, well I have asked over and over. Delia Morris.

Brook Valley: After reading your article “New plan will decide camp’s future” (July, 1) I could not help but to feel angry, thinking about the process that has led to this preparation of a management plan for the reserve land that includes the motor camp, the Cawthron Conservation Park and the Waterworks reserve. In principle, I think a management plan is an excellent idea, but to read Pete Rainey’s comment “We’ve had some really good, robust discussions with people living at the camp and the wider community.” was insulting. “Good, robust discussions” imply some sort of dialogue and, one

Don’t touch the sides of the tunnel when you head through it though. They’re absolutely filthy from years of train smoke. Scott Marris. If they allow walkers, yes please. Shirley Barrow. I like the idea, but who will pay for the lighting in the tunnel? Peter Dawson.

would hope, involving facts. Instead, the process surrounding the closure of the camp has been cloaked with silence and delay tactics. Even a council staff manager recommended councillors to make information available to the public, which the council chose to ignore. Why? My reservations with this management plan lies in my lack of faith that councillors will be able to put aside personal preferences, the brief outlining of the management plan that the planners will be given by councillors and selective information sharing. Please, prove me wrong. Helen Black, The Brook.

Andrew Board The path to a $12 million redevelopment for the Suter Art Gallery has been cleared, with the signing of the heads of agreement between the trust behind the gallery and Nelson City Council. The fundraising goal for the development was finalised last October, and work is expected to begin before the end of the year and take around 18 months to complete. Ian MacLennan and John Hambleton from the Bishop Suter Trust signed the agreement with the Nelson mayor Rachel Reese last week, with the redevelopment equally funded by the trust and the council. The agreement establishes a project governance committee, comprised of senior council officers and members of the trust. Rachel says the redevelopment will honour the national significance of the Suter as New Zealand’s oldest art gallery on the same site. “Once complete, the Suter Gallery’s rich history will be well and truly matched by its bright future. The trust has worked professionally and efficiently with us on the project, and we look forward to continuing that partnership.” Ian says once the redevelopment is complete, the gallery space will be much bigger and it will be able to attract top touring exhibitions. A project manager has been appointed and expressions of interest have been called for construction of the redevelopment.

Suter upgrade to start before Christmas

TUESDAY 8 July 2014

For the first time in its history, Nelson Coastguard is running a membership drive and what better way to launch it than a fresh name for its main rescue boat. The vessel will now be called Talley’s Rescue 1, after Talley’s agreed to sponsor the coastguard’s rescue boat. It was blessed and renamed at a ceremony on Saturday morning with Nelson mayor, Rachel Reese, and the general manager of Talley’s, Tony Hazlett. Coastguard president Mark Rumsey says it is great to have the support of Talley’s and now they’re asking for the support of

Cruisy drive for American cars Mark Dayman admits he’s a pretty shy guy, but there’s certainly nothing shy about his 2010 Dodge Viper ACR. With a V10 engine under its hood, and the ability to reach a stinging top speed of 325km/h, the eye-catching Viper is one of the fastest production cars on the planet, let alone on Nelson streets, where it’s mainly restricted to going under a 50km/h speed limit. Mark has only owned the Americanimported car for a few months but was “waiting for the weather to come good” before taking it out. With the sun shining on Sunday, he finally got his chance to bring it out for the Nelson City Rod and Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise. There were plenty of old school hot rods and classics, showcasing the best in American motoring from the 1920s until now – but it was his modern car that was one of the most eye-catching. The Atawhai man says the Viper lives up to his expectations. “I’ve got an old school Challenger but I’ve always liked the Viper. It’s still American, hand-built in Detroit. It’s not a Lamborghini or a Ferrari, but it’ll run with one of them all day,” he says. “The top end speed is

It’s pretty impressive.” Just ten Dodge Viper ACRs were made in 2010. Five in black and silver, and five in black and green. One of each was taken to Nürburgring, where they clocked the world record for the fastest lap done by any production car. The rest of the cars were then sold off, and one is now owned by Mark. “As it stands today it’s still the fifth or sixth fastest. This has an air con and stereo,

and the other [fast] cars are hybrid super cars designed for a track.” The Independence Day cruise is held annually by the Nelson City Rod and Custom Club, and this year attracted more than 60 vehicles. The cruise went from the Suburban Club, through to Nelson and then out to the Riwaka Hotel, and raised $623 for Canteen. Event organiser Ian Jones was pleased with the turnout, both in numbers and the range of vehicles.

Tasman to take Buller’s rubbish Buller will be dumping 3000 tonnes of their rubbish in the Tasman’s districts Eve’s Valley landfill over the next year but it’s all in the name of collaboration and profit. The Tasman District Council announced last week that the Eve’s Valley landfill will be taking 2500-3000 tonnes of refuse from the Buller District Council over the next year. The first load was trucked in from Westport and Reefton last Tuesday and TDC’s engineering activity planning manager Dwayne Fletcher says the contract “benefits both parties”. Although Dwayne says the financial terms of the contract are confidential, the TDC is receiving a payment that “exceeds the short-run costs of operating the landfill by quite a lot” and would provide funding for its long term operating costs. Dwayne says it is also an example of neighbouring councils collaborating to use their resources efficiently. Councils in Canterbury had similar arrangements with Hurunui’s Kate Valley landfill taking refuse from Selwyn, Ashburton Christchurch and Waimakariri. He says there is no risk of Tasman becoming a dump for the rest of the South Island because Nelson City, Marlborough and Grey councils already had large landfills and it would be uneconomic to transport refuse from Canterbury.

My passion for art became rekindled as an adult when I was introduced to the wonderful world of tattooing. The health and safety of my clients is extremely important to me, so certain procedures must be adhered to, such as single-use sterile tubes and blister-packed sterile needles. Brad enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, in particular endodontics [root canal therapy]. In addition to dentistry, Brad is also a winemaker. He came to the Nelson region to work the harvest at Neudorf Vineyards in Upper Moutere, and liked the area so much he decided to stay in Nelson over winter to work as a locum dentist until his next winemaking stint comes along [in Oregon, USA]. “It is a bit of an unusual career mix” says Brad. “The sugar and acid in grape juice and wine can be very destructive to one’s teeth, so I take extra precautions over vintage time to protect my teeth when I’m doing a lot of tasting”. With another dentist available, waiting times at Tahunanui Dental Centre have shortened and new patients are welcome. Roger Raizada, chef and proprietor of Maharaja India, is passionate about instructing people in the health benefits of Indian spices. His range of spice mixes was created to convey to the hospitality industry that a better knowledge of how to use Indian spices is needed to provide a healthier product for customers. Most chefs around the world that Roger has seen, are not aware of the reasons why they use certain spices and the effect they can have on people’s health. For example, the use of mace or cinnamon powder in creamy dishes can actually reduce cholesterol. Roger is now offering specialised private classes in order to teach people how to use Indian spices in a beneficial way. By using the right spices in cream-based dishes or on meats, you can reduce the effects of the food on your health and, in Roger’s case, overcome serious health problems. Roger’s classes cost $50 per person to cover the cost of ingredients and you get to pick the meal you want to learn about and eat. His classes will not only teach you the steps needed to re-create the dish for yourself, but also give you a comprehensive lesson on using Indian spices. For the month of July, Roger will be focusing his classes on Nelson, so contact Roger now to book a night of Indian cuisine.

Free Parking One week after the introduction of the free parking policy in the city, Nelson Weekly hit the streets to hear what shoppers and retailers thought of the move. Most said it has already had a positive

impact on the city. Many of the shoppers spoken to say while they usually did their shopping in Nelson anyway, it was a much nicer experience without having to worry about

finding change for the parking metres and they think people will stay longer in the city as a result. “We come in frequently from Atawhai. Pretty much every Saturday, but it would be a lot better if we could get away with free parking,” says Ru Cooper.

Other shoppers living between Nelson and Richmond are now looking forward to having the choice of where to go without being forced into Richmond due to the cost of parking like Stoke’s Jacqui Soutter who admits the free parking will definitely make

her visits to the city more frequent. And then there are those who believe that the new free parking policy will have no effect on how often they decide to come in because they live in Richmond anyway. “I think it’s a good idea but it’s not going to make much of a difference to us. It’s nice not to have to worry about paying for parking. I have been caught out with not having the right change in the past having forgotten you have to pay because it’s free in Richmond where we work [and shop]. Nelson is just a trip out,” says Hannah Simpson. While the new trial policy is important for shoppers, retailers have also A map of the areas in Nelson city where it is been benefiting now that now free to park for the next three months the barrier of paid parking has been removed. as part of a trial.

I think customers are more relaxed about not rushing back to their cars, I think it’s going really well.” Office worker Tony Morgan says he parks in a space paid for by his work but he believes the scheme is a good idea. "I’ve come in from Stoke and I think it will bring people into the city, I think it’s a very good idea." Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says free parking is about providing a winter boost for the city centre. "Business owners represent a significant slice of our community. This is one way we can respond to the needs of businesses in the CBD during the traditionally quieter winter months.” Cathy Madigan, Manager of Uniquely Nelson says it’s fantastic that the council has listened to retailers concerns and has agreed to support Nelson city with this free

"We know people love Nelson city and we want to make it more enjoyable for them to experience the arts and culture, food and wine, fashion and shopping and of course, the great al fresco café scene and our gorgeous sunny winter days.” The trial period will run until 30 September 2014 with the hope that the initial boost free parking has given to winter trading will continue to be successful for shoppers and retailers.

For the month's of July, August and September car parking in Nelson city is free. Nelson City Council decided to give the idea a three month trial to see if it would invigorate the city and its struggling retailers. The free parking will be for the applicable time limit on that car park, to a maximum of three hours. The central area of Wakatu Square will remain as all day paid parking, while the one hour parking spaces around the edge of the square will be free. The trial period will run from 1 July until 30 September 2014.

In recent weeks we have noticed an increase in boy racer type behaviour on some of our rural roads and as a result these drivers are going to get some intense attention from Police until the matter is sorted. The last thing we want is some innocent member of the public being injured or killed by an irresponsible driver showing off to their mates. I'm aware that we also need to protect these young drivers from themselves. In coming weeks we will be doing our level best to stamp out boy racer behaviour and Police will be more than happy to impound vehicles or see someone's car crushed if they refuse to get the message. I'd ask members of the public who see dangerous driving to call Police immediately - you could save a life. If we can respond we will. Make sure you get the registration details of the vehicle and note the time and the place. If we can't locate the vehicle at the time we will always follow up with the registered owner. Vehicle owners are obliged to tell us who was driving their vehicle at any given time.

SPORT Trophy comp a highlight for deerstalkers Locally Owned and Operated

www.shuttersport.co.nz

The New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association annual trophy competition will be a highlight of their annual conference starting in Nelson on Friday, but there will be some key discussions on game management and research on the agenda as well. NZDA members from throughout the country will be bringing their biggest, and in some cases most unusual, trophies to the conference for the annual Antler, Horn and Tusk competition. Nelson branch president Morgan Rogers says the trophies are always one of the talking points

of the conference and they will be open to the public at the Suburban Club, on Sunday from 12pm to 1pm. "We will also have many of our treasured trophies that were hunted by world-famous hunting legends, being transported out of our lodge at Lake Rotoiti, on display," Morgan says. However, Morgan says the conference will also be focusing on the association's partnerships with the Department of Conservation and their role on the newly formed Game Animal Council. It will also be updating members on the association's role

in a number of game animal research projects being conducted around the country. Morgan says NZDA collaborates with DOC on a number of projects in Nelson, including controlling goat populations in the Mt Richmond Forest Park. He says DOC provides training and helicopters for hunters to go into the park and cull goats, and the partnership is working very well. The use of 1080 poison in sensitive areas like Kahurangi National Park will also be on the agenda at the conference, and Morgan says they are keen to promote alterna-

tive methods of controlling possums. The Minister of Conservation Nick Smith and director-general of conservation Lou Sanson will be at the conference, so it will be a good opportunity to discuss their views on 1080. The conference will also discuss NZDA's role on the Game Animal Council which was formed late last year. The conference starts at the Suburban Club at 7.30pm on Friday and continues until Sunday. About 100 delegates from the association's 51 branches will attend.

Abel Tasman National Park Possum and Rat Control Operation As part of the Project Janszoon ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Project Janszoon are planning aerial pest control to protect the park’s native species from rising rat and possum numbers. This pest control is essential for native species recovery and ecosystem restoration. The DOC Motueka Office and Project Janszoon intend to apply non-toxic pre-feed cereal baits during the first period of fine weather on or after the 21st of July, followed 5 or more days later by baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) over the following area of the national park and the Moncrieff Private Reserve. Description of the area 12,359ha bounded by a line from the Awapoto Hut to Awaroa Inlet in the north, the Pikikiruna range in the west, the Inland track from Wainui Saddle to Tinline Bay in the south, and out to the coast in the east; but excluding the Abel Tasman Coast Track and 100m wide each side of it. The Marahau and Upper Takaka catchments are not affected. Large exclusion zones have been placed around the Torrent Bay and Awaroa townships. During the operation all inland tracks will be closed, but the Coast Track will remain open for use. Method of Control Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above areas. The baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2 cm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. This pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • DO NOT touch bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • DEADLY TO DOGS, do not allow dogs access to animal carcasses Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at public access points in the park.

Nelson Under-14 back Nikora Kanara makes a break through the Waimea College Under-14 Gold defence, during Saturday’s 59-17 win. Nikora dotted down twice during the game, while other standouts include Nyrin Wells, Kyle Skinner, Damien Wilson and Tyler Murray. Coach Craig Foster said the whole team played well in a game where the tries were spread across the board. This is the first time the Nelson Rugby Club has entered a team in the Under-14 competition. Marist and Wanderers to host semis Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz This weekend’s semi-finalists have been decided, but some late drama means Galbraith Nelson won’t be a part of it. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers — a team that had not been beaten by any Nelson club this season — somehow lost to Kahurangi on Saturday and conceded four tries, meaning the MotuekaRiwaka club have leap-frogged Nelson to steal the final semi-final spot in the Car Company division one rugby competition. Wanderers will now play Kahurangi in the first semi-final on Saturday, while Wakatu Marist host Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys in the other. Marist captain Shawn Begg says there is plenty of belief amongst his young squad and he was happy with their form, despite a recent loss to bottom-

We’ve had some losses against teams we shouldn’t have lost to, but we’ve learnt from those,” he says. “We’re a young team but we’ve been ticking along quite nicely. We’re quite confident heading into the semi-finals, the boys are pretty happy.” Marist have beaten Waimea Old Boys

twice already this season, but Shawn says the defending champions should be favourites after winning eight games straight, including the weekend’s 13-7 victory over Tasman Trophy champions Waitohi. “They’ve got a lot more players than they did at the start of the season so it’ll be a different Waimea team, but we’ve beaten them twice this season. They’re definitely the team to beat in the finals though — they’re stacked all over the park.” Marist last won the championship in 2011 but pulled out of the competition all together in 2013. This Saturday’s semi-final will mark a triumphant return to division one rugby, especially if they go on to win. Their key players include halfback Shawn, loose forward Dan Hytongue, and goal kicker Jackson Harvey. The Wanderers versus Kahurangi game will be held in Brightwater, while Marist and Waimea will play at Trafalgar Park. Both matches kick off at 3pm.

Field this week. Having previously entered as Nelson, Marlborough and Buller, the three areas have joined together for this tournament to form a Tasman team. The merger came after Buller and Marlborough had been struggling for numbers, and has resulted in three extra players for the predominantly Nelsonbased side. “We’ve got 13 girls from the Nelson district, two from Buller and one from Marlborough, but previously they’d played under their own associations,” explains manager David Harris. “The two other areas were short on numbers

but it’s created a little bit more depth for us.” The National Association tournament is played at the same time as a regional tournament – where Nelson is linked with Capital and has Nicole Cant playing for them – and David says the team’s goal was to finish inside the top eight. “We’ve had some really good performances in the lead up to this event and we’ve got a very even team this year. We’re really confident that they’ll get in the top eight, but tournaments are tournaments and you never know what will happen.” Tasman will play Wellington, Canterbury

and Taranaki in pool play to decide which team advances to the next round. David says traditionally the teams from the bigger centres tend to be the strongest, with Wellington and Canterbury both likely to be very tough opposition. “We’ve got a reasonably tough pool but we played both of them in warm up games and only lost to them narrowly by one goal, and back then we were just worried about performances, combinations and not the scoreboard.” The tournament didn't start that well for the Tasman team though, losing its first game 5-1 to Wellington on Monday morning.

Strong start sees Stoke home editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

In the Premier 2 grade, Stoke Sun City Paint & Panel have continued to impress since gaining promotion from Grade 1. While they were defeated by top seed and relegated Premier 1 team, Prices Pharmacy Black in the first round, they have now recorded two consecutive victories. Stoke got off to “a cracker of a start” against Richmond Black, they played with both patience and confidence and good options were taken to re-set if required, with wing defence Rhi Cairns always in attendance. Anna Avery, at wing attack, used her body well to control the front space to receive the stress-free pass and delivered some great ball to her shooter, Deanna Hunter. Everything went Stoke’s way in the first period when they had a commanding 17-7 advantage on the back of an outstanding shooting display from Deanna. Richmond made several changes in the second period which soon paid dividends. Dana Clarke was introduced in the unfamiliar position of goal keep, in order to halt

Phill Jones couldn’t celebrate retirement with another NBL title, as the Fico Finance Nelson Giants ended their season with a semi-final loss to the Wellington Saints, on Friday night. The Giants never looked like clawing back a 5432 second quarter deficit, going on to lose 89-71 to the eventual champions, at the TSB Arena in Wellington. Phill, playing in his 369th NBL game, was restricted to just four points in 26 minutes of court time. After beating the Giants, Wellington went on to topple the Hawke’s Bay Hawks in the final. Giants MVP Jamal Boykin was named in the All Star Five, following the Final Four weekend.

however with the majority of the team returning from 2013 Grade 2 champions, the changes were seamless. Captain Georgia Wright lead her team by example and would have had her best game of the season. At times she was “a third feeder” but, when required, converted with confidence from long range. She picked up a huge amount of loose ball from rebounding opportunities. Tanya Popata answered the call as a circle defender for the injured Jess Hildyard and made a good fist of it. She displayed great drive through court and provided an abundance of hustle. a VariEd lifE While the Newmans Brothers Stables in Foxhill were built in 1878 to house horses, in later years it became the stage for fighting cocks. When motor cars replaced horse drawn carriages a floor was

laid over the original cobbles and the stables became a venue for dances and roller skating. Then Cock fighting which was popular in the 20s saw the birds take over. The practice died out in the late 30s.
